The relationship and family panel pairfam ("Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics") is a multidisciplinary longitudinal study to research partnership and family life forms in Germany.
In 2008, the study began with over 12,000 randomly selected individuals in Germany from the birth cohorts 1971-73, 1981-83, 1991-93 and 2001-03. Until 2022, pairfam has been collecting annual survey data from these people, as well as their partners, parents and children. The processed and anonymized data are available to the professional public for scientific analysis. Thus, pairfam offers a worldwide unique analysis potential regarding the development of partnership and generational relationships in different phases of life.
After 14 years, the funding of pairfam by the German Research Foundation finally ends and in 2021 the last independent survey (wave 14) was carried out under the project name pairfam.
But the survey will by no means be discontinued: from 2022, the pairfam sample will be part of the FReDA surveys. Panel data will therefore continue to be collected. The content focus on partnership and family-related issues remains. The multi-actor design focuses on the dyadic survey of partners.
The field work of the 14th wave of the pairfam survey already marks the transition to FReDA. Most of the pairfam anchor respondents and their partners were interviewed online for the first time, which corresponds to the FReDA main survey mode. The child and parenting surveys were conducted for the last time. The processed data of pairfam surveys 1-14 are available - for more information regarding the data access, see the pairfam website.
You can find an Interview with principle investigator Karsten Hank here. He describes what made this panel so special – and looks forward to pairfam's future as part of the FReDA research project.
There is also an brief report of the 7th pairfam Interdisciplinary International Conference in Munich which provided an opportunity to look back – and forward.
You can still contact the support@pairfam.de. Comprehensive information and documentation on the relationship and family panel is available on the pairfam website. In addition to general information on the creation and development of the panel study, there is also a regularly updated pairfam bibliography. In addition, all materials such as codebooks, questionnaires, method reports, instrument overviews and instructions are available for download in German and English.

FReDA releases the complete dataset from the first wave of the survey. We trace the process of data collection and summarize the most important facts and figures for you.
How are the data collected in FReDA? You can find detailed information on the study’s samples, contents and survey modes here.
Numerous researchers took the opportunity to submit their own research questions or modules to FReDA, which will be included in the autumn survey of the fifth wave in 2025.
Every three years, FReDA is part of the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS). This makes international comparative analyses possible.
FReDA continues the surveys of the pairfam study so that these cohorts can also continue to be analysed.
FReDA also asks the partners of all anchor persons to participate in the study. This makes dyadic analyses possible.
