Which research questions can be answered with FReDA? What types of analyses are possible with the FReDA design? And how (un)complicated is the handling of the data files? That's what 25 researchers wanted to find out at the FReDA Autumn School 2023. At the first event in this series, they experienced a detailed and practical introduction to working with the panel's data sets.
The three-day workshop was organized by the FReDA project together with the research focus "Interdisciplinary Public Policy" (IPP) at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from September 18 to 20, 2023, and offered a good balance between background information on FReDA and on working with panel data on the one hand and practical independent work in hands-on sessions on the other. This allowed participants to try it out for themselves and experience what it feels like to work with FReDA. In addition, the event conveyed where and how data users can still find out about the data collections and their contents independently later on. On the evening of the first day of the workshop, participants were invited to a reception with wine and snack food.

The FReDA Autumn School was aimed at advanced bachelor and master students, PhD students as well as "postdocs" with Stata skills. Here they had the opportunity to participate in an intensive introduction to research with panel data. In addition, the participants learned how FReDA is linked to the pairfam and GGS panels, which have been in existence for some time, and what analysis possibilities result from this. The link between the "anchor" respondents and their partners and the dyadic analysis of these data could already be practiced. In the various hands-on sessions, workshop participants were able to pursue their own research questions with the data and check whether FReDA is suitable for their personal research project.
The next FReDA Autumn School is scheduled for 2024. We will inform you in time about the exact date and registration options on the FReDA website.
