Save the date: The second International FReDA User Conference will take place in Mannheim on 7 and 8 October 2024. National and international researchers from all disciplines who conduct research with data from the FReDA panel or with data from the German Family Panel pairfam or the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) are invited. Numerous presentations and analyses have been submitted for the conference, promising very exciting insights into current research work.
You can download the programme of the Second International User Conference of FReDA here.
The aim of the FReDA User Conference is to offer scientists a forum where they can present their (preliminary) research results and receive feedback and suggestions from other users of FReDA, pairfam or GGS data. Of course, the user conference is also a good opportunity to network and think about future collaborations.
The programme is packed: In addition to the keynotes by Prof Pia Schober on "Understanding Presistence and Change in Gender and Relationship Attitudes across Relationship and Family Transitions in Eastern and Western Europe" and by Prof Denis Gerstorf on "On the Role of Historical Change for Adult Development (in Midlife)", research papers will be presented in five sessions that deal with family demographic issues on the one hand and reflect on methodological aspects of working with the panel data on the other. The exact programme of the conference with all presentations can be viewed here.

Exciting analyses, lively discussions and an intensive scientific exchange - the first FReDA user conference from 3 to 5 July 2023 in Wiesbaden was a highly interesting forum for family demographic research.
At the conference entitled "3 Years of FReDA: Families and Partnerships in Germany and Europe", more than 20 analyses were presented that were compiled using data from the first wave of the FReDA panel or data from the partner projects pairfam or the GGS. The contributions not only presented the latest research findings, but also highlighted the potential of the data sets used, explained methodological challenges in analysing panel data and presented innovative methodological approaches.

Demographic developments pose major challenges for politics, business and society. As part of the first user conference, we also spoke to Prof Dr Marcel Thum, Director of the ifo Institute in Dresden, about the importance of FReDA for policy advice. "With FReDA, we can recognise, understand and react to demographic upheavals," says Prof. Dr Marcel Thum. You can read the full interview here.
Prof Dr Marcel Thum is Director of the ifo Institute in Dresden. He is also a university professor of economics, in particular finance, at the Technical University of Dresden. His research topics and focal points include demography, finance, political economy and the labour market. Prof Dr Thum is also Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Finance and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB).
We also spoke to Prof Dr Anne Gauthier about the importance of transnational research, as made possible by the "Generations and Gender Survey". After all, the FReDA surveys are also part of the GGS. You can find the full interview with Anne Gauthier here.
Prof. Dr Anne Gauthier is Director of the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP), Senior Researcher at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and Professor of Comparative Family Research at the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on cross-national family research, in particular on fertility decisions, family policy, parenthood and transitions to adulthood.
