The Russian attack on Ukraine has triggered an enormous movement of refugees: since the start of the war on February 24, 2022, more than one million people have fled Ukraine to Germany alone. For the study "Refugees from Ukraine in Germany", questions from the FReDA sample were also used.
The study surveyed 11,225 Ukrainians aged 18 to 70 who fled to Germany between February 24 and June 8, 2022, and were registered with the population registration offices. Topics included the refugees' flight circumstances, family situation, school, vocational and academic qualifications, employment, German language skills and future intentions. The survey was conducted between August and October 2022.
The first results were published in December. Among other things, the study shows that many Ukrainian refugees are already actively participating in life in Germany: 17 per cent are already employed in Germany, half are attending a language course, and 60 per cent live in their own apartment. The refugee children attend schools and some also daycare centers. While most Ukrainian refugees plan to stay in Germany only temporarily, a quarter would probably like to live here permanently.
The study "Refugees from Ukraine in Germany" is a joint project of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Research Center of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at DIW Berlin. A second round of surveys has been conducted since January 2023.
